Why Canadian investors should be watching Mexico’s energy reforms | Financial Post

Canadian investors would do well to watch how Mexico’s energy sector evolves as Mexico’s President Enrique Pena Nieto champions and enacts the ambitious reforms he promised during the 2012 election.

Since taking office, Mr. Pena Nieto has dismantled a longstanding monopoly in the energy sector so that companies located abroad will soon be able to access the country’s vast resources and burgeoning middle class.

This past summer, he signed into law sweeping policies that will open the oil and gas industry to private-sector investment for the first time since it was expropriated in 1938 to state-run Petroleos Mexicanos, known locally as Pemex.
